Just thought I would write up a quick summary of the gun types in Borderlands 2, based on my experiences with the game:
BanditWorks well with: Anything
 + Large clip size.
 - Long reload times.
DahlWorks well with: Pistols, shotguns, smgs, assault rifles
 + Burst-fire while zoomed.
 + Low recoil.
 - Burst-fire while zoomed does not work too well with sniper rifles.
HyperionWorks well with: Anything (I generally avoid these)
+ Stability increases with each shot fired.
 - Terrible stability until a few shots are fired.
JacobsWorks well with: Pistols, shotguns and sniper rifles
 + Very accurate.
+ Fire as fast as you can pull the trigger.
 + High base weapon damage.
 - Lot's of recoil.
 - The semi-auto nature of these weapons means assault rifles/smgs are not fully automatic.
 - Generally have smaller magazine size than that of other manufactures.
MaliwanWorks well with: Anything
+ Come with elemental damage as standard.
 - Base weapon damage is usually lower than that of other manufactures.
TedioreWorks well with: Anything, but the use for sniper rifles is limited
+ Throw the weapon when reloaded - which explodes. The more ammo left in the magazine, the more damage it does.
 + Quick 'reload' speed.
 - Lose all remaining ammo in clip when reloaded.
 - Danger of damaging self with the explosion.
TorgueWorks well with: Anything
+ Deals high explosive (splash) damage.
 - Bullets / projectiles move quite slow.
 - Can never spawn with additional elemental damage effects.
VladofWorks well with: Anything, but rocket launchers and sniper rifles work especially well
 + High fire rates.
+ All Vladof RPG's spawn with 'Use less ammo per shot'.
 - Assault rifles need time to 'spin up', since they are basically mini-guns.
