I have been reading up on Dead Island a bit to see what we can expect. It looks like guns are not only rare and limited with ammo, but also are not seen for pretty much the first quarter of the game.

It sounds much more survival-horror-rpg based than Left 4 Dead's shoot-it-until-it dies approach. I am definitely looking forward to playing this one.

Experience and leveling up play a part, along with skill trees and the like.

I also remember Greg said this was quite a good game - but I believe he had it on Xbox.

So, Greg, given you have played this game to death - is they any pearls of wisdom (tips) you can offer us for this game?

I am also interested to know what the strong / weak characters are and what you should be investing skill points into. TCT for that.

What little I have learned so far about the characters:

Logan - Knife Man

Apparently, Logan is a bit of a jack-of-all trades character that can do pretty well in all circumstances, but it not exceptionally brilliant with any single thing. He has skills in blade, blunt, throwing and firearms. He is also an alcoholic - the only character with skills to make drinking beneficial, including health regen and increased damage if you can stomach the view.

Xian - Slashy Gashy

The most fragile character of all - but with high burst melee DPS. She uses sharp weapons pretty much exclusively and is always on the move - requiring a more agile style of play.

Purna - Rooty tooty, point and shooty

The firearms expert. She focuses on firearms pretty much exclusively - with a little bit of melee to back her up. Her fury skill tree is apparently very powerful, since it gives you unlimited ammo for a short period of time. Investing in skills that help you maintain fury for longer are therefore worthwhile.

Sam B - Tank Gangster

The most resilient character in the game - the effective tank that specialises in using blunt weapons. Focusing on skills that regen health and keep him alive long-enough to stay in the fray longer are his style. A great front-liner and agro generator.

I went with Purna this time.

On another note, I also found out that while there is no official way to respec your character, you can use the DISE to edit characters and effectively respec them, in case you were wondering.

I created a rough plan for her:

FURY TREE

GUARDIAN - 1/1
Unleash your Fury to draw your private sidearm.

ATTACK FORMATION - 3/3
Increases damage done by all team members (including you) when Fury is active.

GRIM INSPIRATION - 3/3
Kills with modified weapons gain additional rage.

GUARDIAN SPIRIT - 1/1
Fury lasts longer and you can take out two targets at once.

VOLATILE - 3/3
Decreases the amount of rage required to activate Fury.

RIGHTEOUS FIRE - 3/3
Killing enemies with firearms gains additional rage.

GUARDIAN ANGEL - 1/1
Fury lasts even longer and you can take out three targets at once.

COMBAT TREE

BLADE FIGHTER - 1/1
Sharp weapons are now more efficient and effective.

HARD KNOCKS - 3/3
Increases damage with melee weapons.

GENDER WARS - 3/3
Increases damage against opposite sex.

MAINTENANCE - 3/3
Increases durability of melee weapons.

FIREARMS TRAINING - 1/1
You need guns, lots of guns. What's more important, you have the skills to handle them.

COLD RAGE - 3/3
A kill increases your critical hit chance for a few seconds.

WUNDERWAFFE - 3/3
Increases modified firearms damage.

GUN KATA - 1/1
You handle firearms better.

SURVIVAL TREE

BOOST MOOD - 1/1
Boosts skills related to damage, force, handling or durability by 15% for everyone (including you) in aura range.

OPTIMAL MAINTENANCE - 2/3
Reduces repair cost.

PICKLOCK - 3/3
Allows opening of locks.

CUSTOM MAINTENANCE - 3/3
Increases durability of modified weapons.

BOOST AMBIENCE - 1/1
Boosts skills related to damage, force, handling or durability by +20% for everyone (including you) in aura range.

RECYCLER - 3/3
You get more bullets when creating ammo.

PROVIDENCE - 3/3
Increases number of bullets found in loot.

SECOND CHANCE - 3/3
Chance of being instantly revived after death.

JACKPOT - 3/3
Chance to loot rare items.

RAIN OF BULLETS - 3/3
Increases the amount of ammo you can carry.

BOOST AURA - 1/1
Boosts skills related to damage, force, handling, or durability by 25% for everyone (including you) in aura range.

I was very tempted by her but it takes so long to get guns and when you do ammo is rare.

But let me know how you get on with her.

Will do. Apparently she does really well from what I have read, but is just a slow starter.

Also, I found a character planner (the one I used to do the above build) here.

I haven't opened fury tree yet i think it lets me kill multiple enemies with throw weapons.

So does Purna's fury move (use sidearm) need ammo or is the weapon exempt?

The city is mental isn't.

You should - it's a lifesaver. I have already got to the bottom of this tree with Purna (maxed), as it's so frelling awesome :-)

Infinite ammo! :-) :-)
The city is mental isn't.
It's pretty cool change of pace, I am enjoying it. Just plowing through all the side-quests before I touch any of the story ATM. Shame about the lack of drivable vehicles though - other than fast travel it takes ages to get anywhere.

Where abouts are you up to on the city? Because if we are close enough, we can continue Co-oping with these characters for a bit if you like..? Are you on tonight?

I have only just got there and done a couple of side quests need to make more use of the armoured car i think.

Not sure if i am on tonight will have to see.  I think i need to invest in the fury tree for my guy.

So Purna is very good i was very tempted to go with her she will difinately by my next character i try.  Have to say i am loving this game nice to do something different and it is a very good game not sure why i never got it.

I don't think it's drivable after you get there :-(. I tried and it wouldn't let me in.

Well if you are, I would like to continue with Purna, rather than Logan ATM - so if we are close enough, I would prefer to play with her. I don't mind doing some missions I have already done etc.. to help you out if you are not where I am or vice-versa (if you don't mind).
I think i need to invest in the fury tree for my guy.
It's definitely worth a look.

Purna is definitely not the push-over that we took her for when we first started playing, that's for sure. I prefer her to Logan so far - but then I didn't touch much of Logan's Fury tree either. It's like always having a really good gun, with infinite ammo at your side at all times - that doesn't take up inventory space.
Have to say i am loving this game nice to do something different and it is a very good game not sure why i never got it.
Yeah, I know, I am loving it too. It's basically Borderlands with zombies :-)
