Here are some pictures of the CV I have built

It is a bit of a beast but it handles really well probably because it has about 20 RCS blocks buried in the middle.

What on earth did you do to that link? You should copy the URL the image upload gives you Meg, since uploaded images on not stored in the root, but in images\uploads. If you alter your link to include this (to the link it gives you on the confirmation page) then your pic will show as it should.

As for the ship, it looks impressive indeed. Far larger than I was aiming at building my CV's so far, so I imagine nice and spacious inside? What is the size comparison with the Polaris, out of curiosity? I have been comparing all my ships to that one, since it fits so much into such a small space.

Out of interest, as most of the functions of the ship can be accessed via the menu when standing on it, is there any need for the ships to be so big? Could you compact the size down by reducing the need to actually move around and interact with some of the facilities?

I might have the wrong end of the stick here from my 20 minuets of playing.

You hit the nail on the head there Greg - and reached the same conclusion that I had - that is exactly why I have been building all my ships as small as possible. It saves on materials, fuel and a lot of running around needlessly. Infact, the big ships are pointless no matter what way you look at it, because without the "P" menu, this "issue" is exaggerated even more.

You can yes but it is quicker interfacing with a cargo box (for example) directly

This ship is not that big i would be suprised if it was any bigger than the Polaris.  It is just a bit resource hungry due to the skin of combat steel but i wanted it to take a lot of punishment

Not digging you design Megan, it looks good and appears the features and placement of items is well considered.

I was just thinking of something that is a jack of all trades, a CV that is as small and light as it can be to attain maximum manoeuvrability.

There is a blueprint we have used called Compact CV, that is a good design and small.

Have a look at it in creative mode it well give you some good ideas

Indeed, the compact CV is cool. You may wanna check out my "Wedge" (back on the home planet) Greg - it's literally the smallest I could make it, but yet very feature rich, very good on fuel and extremely maneuverable.

Saying that, my new Normandy is also pretty compact and maneuverable too.

Other than that Greg - we would (I am sure) be interested to see what you come up with. You are right though, you really do want to keep them small if possible.

Does the placement of thrusters about the axis of rotation have much impact on how the ship handles? i.e. if you have the roll thrusters a long way out from the body of the ship you can roll quicker than if they are tucked in in close?

Nope, makes no difference. Just add more RCS's for better roll speed, more thrusters for other directional speed.

So the engines on the upper and lower faces of the 'wings' on your big ship we were looking at yesterday are only for up / down movement?

I believe that is indeed how it works. RCS's seem to control the roll, every other direction is controlled by thrusters. Weird, I know, but this is not Space Engineers. It's simpler and less "real" in a lot of respects.

Hate to say it, but it is really the most efficient design. Hence why there are so many Borg cube CV's on the workshop, and why any efficient ship you design ends up looking like a fucking brick, bur? :-b As I said, just see my "Wedge" ship.

Anyway, for my own reference, this is the design
this is the design

I was going for on my next build. Compact enough to not cause much trouble landing (and for materials), but also enough space to fit weapons and plenty of stuff in-side.

Added three of my ships today:

The Wedge
A very small and light CV designed for survival, equipped with combat armour, turrets and all the usual things you would come to expect with a CV. Very agile and good on fuel. Features a small garden, advanced constructor, rocket and minigun turrets, warp drive, medic chamber, clone chamber etc.

A cheap to build mobile base for all your exploration needs!

Battle Cruiser Slimbob
A "all-in-one" ship created for survival mode that should act as a base of operations and serves equally well as a battle-cruiser thanks to the shell of combat armour and weaponry onboard.

It has a redundancy "cockpit" deeper in the ship for when the worst happens, a farm, 2 advanced constructors, 2 pulse lazers, 1 rocket launcher, minigun turrets, rocket turrets, a garden and all the usual features you would expect a CV to have.

Specs
Type: Capital Ship (Battle Cruiser / All-in-one)
Purpose: Base, Transport, Fighting, Exploration
Armaments: 1 x Artillery Turret, 1 x Rocket Launcher (manual, forward facing), 2 x Pulse Laser (manual, forward facing), 3x Minigun Turret 3x Rocket Turret.
Features: 3 x O2 Tank, 1 x O2 Station, 21 x Cargo Boxes, 4 x Ammo Boxes, 5 x Passenger Seats, 2x Advanced Constructor, 1 x Medic Station, 1 x Clone Chamber, 20 x Grow Plots, 3 x Fridge T2, 1 x Food Processor, 13 x Fuel Tanks, 5 x Generators, 33 x Thrusters, 10 RCS T2, Warp Capable
Blueprint: Workshop, Public
Screenshot: Here

. More available in the workshop link above.

Materials
Iron Ingot: 6160
Sathium Ingot: 2190
Cobolt Ingot: 1440
Silicon Ingot: 1200
Copper Ingot: 1030
Neodymium Ingot: 270
Erestrum Ingot: 40
Zacosium Ingot: 40
Growing Plot: 20

Production Time: 5h 17m

Pocket Normandy SR1
A small-scale version of the "Normandy SR1" from Mass Effect. This one has been built with survival in mind and so is small, agile and light on materials. Saying that, it has everything a CV should have - advanced constructor, garden, fridges, cargo hold, decent defence, med bay etc.

It handles well, is not too fuel-hungry and has everything you should need to explore the far reaches of space.

Have a Monday laugh and take a peek at John's new "ship"
John's new

.

So, we have unshielded and exposed thrusters, a completely unnecessarily MASSIVE ship design, way, WAY too many turrets, exposed elevator, insane iron cost (20,000+) and it looks absolutely hideous. Thank god he hasn't got the resources required to build this atrocity.

Also, added some more details to my Battle Cruiser Slimbob (post above), including costs, features and a screenie.
